Keep out of reach of children

The Hunchback of Notre Dame offers a dangerous Disney innovation: authentic emotion

When people complain about the "disturbing" nature of this latest Disney opus, they're really protesting the movie makers' half-hearted stabs at escapism in a film full of searing wounds. Still, this barely sanitized illustration of Victor Hugo's tragic plea makes The Hunchback of Notre Dame the most moral, and certainly the most relevant, film in the overhyped Disney canon.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Walt Disney. Voices of Tom Hulce, Demi Moore, Kevin Kline. Written by Tab Murphy, Irene Mecchi, Bob Tzudiker, Noni White, Jonathan Roberts, from the novel by Victor Hugo. Directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise. Now showing.
