Chihuahua Charlie's Mexican restaurant succumbed to the McKinney Avenue death rattle December 17. Sources say that TGI Friday's parent Carlson Restaurants Worldwide, which controls the lease on the space, may sublet to an upscale Mexican operator currently eyeing the former Ciao Bella location. Chihuahua Charlie's was owned by Jose Luis Gutierres, who operates several successful restaurants in Mexico...Guest Choice Network, a coalition of restaurant and tavern owners, recently granted The Dallas Morning News an "(Abuse of) Power of the Press" award for warning readers about the dangers of generous restaurant portions. "When eating out, resist temptation to eat everything on your plate," the News opined in "Lighten Up, America! Obesity epidemic threatens nation's well-being," published in June. "Restaurants are notorious for serving too much food." Darn those greedy, socially irresponsible restaurants and their hearty helpings anyway.
On its own, Ruffino's Cabreo Il Borgo, a Tuscan blend of 70 percent Sangiovese and 30 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, has a forceful grip perhaps too powerful for easy enjoyment. But splash the palate with its dried cherry, cedar, chocolate, and green olive essences while dining on rich meats, strong cheeses, or dishes affluently sauced, and feel its generous, velvety balance emerge. Find this wine on lists at the Riviera, Patrizio, Morton's of Chicago on Elm, and Toscana.
In last week's review of Lawry's The Prime Rib, I stated the restaurant had been in its Maple Avenue home for 25 years. Lawry's opened in Dallas in 1983, making its stay on Maple 15 years. In the review of Sullivan's (January 7), I referenced Lonestar Steakhouse & Saloon, Sullivan's corporate parent, as the company that owns Sipango. Representatives for Sipango clarify that Lonestar is a limited partner in the restaurant along with Travis Street Restaurants, whose president and general manager is Ron Corcoran.
