Scene, heard
In the category of Gee Whiz What A Good Idea, Idol Records has finally released a CD version of the Old 97's/Funland split single the two bands recorded in 1995. The four-song disc features the 97's performing Funland's "Garage Sale," Funland remaking "Stoned" by the 97's, and the two original versions. That's for the eight Funland/97's fans who don't already own the thing...

Bryan Wakeland ain't just a drummer, though his rsum might read different: Fever in the Funkhouse, Tripping Daisy, Meredith Miller Band. Don't be fooled by his role in the background, though; his just-released three-disc EP proves him a pretty deft singer-songwriter who don't need no stinkin' band to bail him out. The sound's not too surprising given his background--it's some new boho pop tinged with country, "experimental" enough to make it seem brand-new but retro enough to remind you it isn't--but the result's good enough to make you wish the disc lasted longer than 10 minutes. With the right drugs, it does...

Because you care, Stinkbug has a new guitarist: Eric Trent, formerly of Ugly Mustard. The new line-up makes its debut April 24 at Trees. C'mon. Admit it. You do care...

Speaking of which, the Dallas Observer Music Awards take place April 27 at the Arcadia Theatre, with Tripping Daisy headlining a bill that includes Go Metric USA, The Secret Machines of Captain Audio, Meredith Miller, Bobby Patterson, Mental Chaos, and a special guest mentioned somewhere else on this page. The whole shebang will be emceed by The Ticket's Gordon Keith, and presenters will include Jerry "Mr. Peppermint" Haynes, Harvey Martin, Redbeard, and some other famous folk. The concert and ceremony are free, but tickets are needed to get in. Listen to "Scene, Heard Radio" at 4 p.m. Tuesday--at www.dallasobserver.com--to win yours. If not, hey, we'll figure out how to get them to you. Somehow.
