Akins aching
Los Akins admits to a burning itch to own his own restaurant. The former PoPoLos and Moonshine Cafe chef is holed up at Antonovich's in Plano, where he's assisting chef-proprietor Matt Antonovich. Antonovich is the onetime Sipango chef-partner who got the urge to create his namesake in the former Ricardo's Restaurante Mexicano space after channeling advice from his deceased grandmother. Akins insists his Antonovich stint is a temporary respite, but Antonovich has other ideas--or maybe his grandmother does. "He's trying to offer me a pretty good package to stay on, but I really want to go do my own thing," Akins admits. Akins says he's gathered backers to launch his own Mediterranean-inspired spot in Dallas. Yet that's not all that's attracting his attention. He says his bid to grab PoPoLos at Preston and Royal and revive its bakery is still squirming with potential. "They've been calling me since November," he says. Maybe someone should send him a coin to flip.

More About

Street Talk tanks
They were popping up around the Dallas area like weeds over the last several months. North Dallas. Richardson. The Colony. Addison. Now they've withered like the victims of a point-blank squirt from a bottle of Roundup. Street Talk Cafe, the casual everything-but-the-kitchen-sink steak-pasta-salad-pizza-family restaurant, was launched last May in Richardson by Longview-based Restaurant Teams International (formerly Fresh'n Lite Inc.) The cafes replaced its Fresh'n Lite Cafe Grill restaurants. (The company converted its Fresh'n Lite locations in North Dallas and The Colony to Street Talk Cafes.) The fizzle hit quickly. Addison was shuttered some two months ago. North Dallas and Richardson shut down within the past month. Now only The Colony location remains. A Restaurant Teams company spokesman didn't say what would become of the shuttered venues except for the Addison location, which will become an Irish pub. This could be the start of a Celtic Cowboy rush--the former Clive & Stuart's location on McKinney Avenue is rumored to emerge as an Irish pub as well.

Rocked fish
Sea-Worthy Restaurants threw one back. The company announced that its Rockfish Seafood Grill in Colleyville has been sold and will be renamed. No word on the new moniker. A new Rockfish will be mounted in the "highly acclaimed" Southlake Town Square, a development a company official says is irresistible.
