Dark Side of the Tunes

When the press release for the "all-new" Pink Floyd LaserSpectacular hit our desk, our first reaction was to check the calendar. Nope, it's not 1985. Our second was to inspect the release more closely, in case it was some ancient leftover. (The Dallas Observer's offices are not what you'd call clean, unless by "clean" you meant "filthy.") The press release came via e-mail, a fairly recent phenomenon, so it must be legit. So we asked ourselves, "Selves, who in this day and age still goes to a Pink Floyd laser show?"

Stoners, former stoners and people who wish they were stoners were ourselves' first guess, but we called Steve Monistere, president of show producer Parmount's Original, to check.

"You have 14-year-olds and 54-year-olds and everything in between," he said. "We do great in Dallas."

Who says Dallas doesn't have much culture? (Don't answer that, silly. It was a rhetorical question.)

The latest show, which comes to The Majestic Theatre on Friday, is billed as "the longest-running and most successful touring rock multimedia show in history," which puts it at the top of a very short list, one imagines. Nevertheless, the current incarnation offers not only flashing lights and soporific pretentious pseudo-rock, but for the first time will present new 3-D technology and Dark Side of the Moon synched to the movie The Wizard of Oz. Special 3-D glasses are included in the ticket price, but bring your own snacks--for later, when the munchies hit.
