Substitute children get their day with Santa, too

Here's a rough estimate of how a standard 24-shot roll of film is typically used in our household:

Santa Paws. Get it? Dogs. Paws. God, we're clever.
Santa Paws. Get it? Dogs. Paws. God, we're clever.

Pictures of feet, walls, ceilings, etc. taken by accident: five

Pictures of family, friends, vacation spots: eight

Pictures of pet cats taken to "finish up the roll": 11

As you might imagine, over the years we've gathered quite a collection of cat photos. Cats on the bed. On the dining table. Fat cats. Skinny cats. Cats that climb on rocks. Centuries from now, long after our snapshots leave the dresser drawer and wind up fossilizing in some landfill, future archaeologists may stumble across an astonishing find--actual documentary evidence of a time when cats ruled the earth.

In other words, we DON'T NEED NO MORE STINKIN' CAT PICTURES.

Well, maybe just one more. With Santa. That would be so damn cute. Besides, it's for a good cause.

Thankfully, Operation Kindness, a no-kill animal shelter, is ready to help us and you complete our portfolios with its annual pet-photos-with-Santa program this Saturday. For $15, you can have a digital picture of your pet cat, dog, llama, wolverine--whatever--taken with St. Nick. (Just kidding about the wolverine part, though a picture of Santa wrestling with a crazed weasel would be pretty cool.)

"It's incredibly popular," says Jonnie England, Operation Kindness executive director. "We have a lot of people who come back year after year."

Photos can be previewed before they're printed, and prints are available in a variety of sizes, from 8-by-10 to a sheet of nine wallet-sized photos. They'll also burn photos to a CD-ROM. Additional sheets of the same photo cost $5 each. (Not to pee on a fine program and a good cause, but seriously, if you're ordering nine wallet-sized snaps of your pets, maybe you should rethink that decision not to have kids.)

Parenting issues aside, England says the shelter hopes to raise $6,000 from the effort, money that will help keep unwanted animals alive, healthy and fed. So go. Buy some pictures. We're sure you have room in that dresser drawer for just one more.
