Dallasites love ice-based entertainment at the utmost convenience. Think about it: Mall shoppers had a rink built in the middle of the Galleria; hockey nuts imported an entire team from Minnesota and this Night & Day staffer was once personally escorted from the Galleria for cross-checking an opponent. Granted, the penalty occurred in front of Bath & Body Works, but the point still stands. When it comes to hockey and skating entertainment, we make it come to us. The Fort Worth Brahmas are embracing the city's selfish mantra with a summer-long traveling-hockey extravaganza that may stop only blocks from your home. Blacktop Brahmas will make 31 pit stops this summer around Tarrant County to put fans young and old through hockey training, practice and scrimmages, and the lessons will feature Brahmas teammates such as head coach Bill Inglis and leading scorer Chad Woollard. Tie up your in-line skates, sharpen your hockey blade and dampen your cross-checking desires Thursday at a Fort Worth Diamond Shamrock at 4150 Bryant Irvin or Friday at Arlington's Arbrook Square at 3810 Cooper St. Classes are both days 10 a.m. to noon. The puppets should be the only ones napping
Considering that Walt Disney (the entity) opts to pull its films off the shelves and into "moratorium" every two weeks, it's time to strike back as an involved parent and tell The Mouse Ears where to stick that out-of-print copy of Sleeping Beauty. Round up the kiddies and head over to the Irving Arts Center on Wednesday for a marionette presentation of the aforementioned story, and afterward treat your young ones to a crash course in making their very own stringed playthings. That way, not only is a blow struck for Joe Consumer, but D.I.Y seeds are also sown for future generations should our nation resort to a vintage eastern European "cheap entertainment for the peasants" way of life. See, and you thought it was just a way to spend an afternoon. Oh, no. This is cultural diversification and preservation. The Irving Arts Center is located at 3333 N. Camp Out
Imagine 25,000 white refrigerators, lined up side-by-side, covered with the impressive doodlings of children, held on by 100,000 alphabet magnets. It's an image worthy of a Cristo art stunt, and it's roughly the game plan for the Irving Arts Center's Kids Arts/Kids' Works student show gleaned from the busy, booger-picking hands of IAC's summer art camp participants. No fridges, alas, and no magnets, either. The work, including paintings, works on paper, sculpture, ceramics and fiber and plastic art, will be on view in the center's Focus Gallery--just as real art should be. The show is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and runs through July 31 at the Irving Arts Center, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd. Call 972-252-7558. --Annabelle Massey Helber
