I admit to growing up in front of the television. Everything I needed to know I learned from Sesame Street. Of course, that was before CD players and Dr. Phil. But now in the age of self-help, child psychologist Dr. Don MacMannis (also known as Dr. Mac) offers A Pocket of Tunes.It has already created a buzz, winning the Dr. Toy Best Vacation Children's Products Award for 2003 and appearing as a popular pick in family magazines.Using musical styles such as rap and country, the 14-song CD and activity book teaches kids about sharing, conquering their fears and taking responsibility. And as the music director for the PBS animated series Jay Jay the Jet Plane, Dr. Mac knows a thing or two about fun with learning. He will perform his helpful sing-alongs August 19 at Barnes & Noble at Lincoln Park. The free event begins at 10:30 a.m. and will be followed by B&N's weekly story time with Mrs. Debbie. Like mayors of past, Mayor Laura Miller is an avid supporter for the development of future leaders, lending her name and title to the 2003 Summer Reading Program. Rumor is, Saturday morning she's headed to the Dallas Zoo to celebrate with program participants and their parents at the Awards and Recognition End-of-the-Summer Reading Program Party. Logging reading hours all summer in the public library, it's speculated these readers may have one goal in mind: winning the main drawing. Its content and value have not been disclosed. No animals are harmed during the performances of Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show at Fort Worth's cozy Cowtown Coliseum, although 150 years ago, if cattle made it this far into the historic Stockyards, they were heading for Hereford heaven by way of the nearby Swift meatpacking plant. Glossing over the gruesome grit of authentic cowboy life, this living history lesson in the guise of rip-snortin' entertainment still rings true. Pawnee Bill's storytellers, singers and tricksters of the Wild West trade--riders, ropers, gunslingers--narrate, sing and perform rodeo feats of strength and daring with horses and Texas longhorn cattle. This year's show with new acts and talent, including stars Austin Anderson and Pamela Roetschke, is 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at 121 E.
