Brad Oldham--soft-spoken sculptor, metallurgical production god, demure man of mystery--is holding his first gallery show, On Track, on Friday at DEBRIS (1205 Slocum St.; receptions held Friday evenings 6:30 to 8:30 through December 6; call 214-752-8855 for more info). You should go see it for many reasons, not the least of which is that the nine pieces of artwork on display are seriously fab. When a few of us from the Dallas Observer offices perused his portfolio, we were blown away. The sculptures were at once modern and timeless, all infused with Oldham's thoughtful, mischievous sensibility. But when you go to these gallery openings, you want to know about the artist as well as his work. Never fear. Here are some suggested topics with which you can engage him in conversation: 1) how close he and his rec-league teammates came to being beaten up by a dozen or so guys who chased them through the Centrum building; 2) the finer points of button-making; and 3) if his third-grade son still has the hots for my fourth-grade daughter. --Eric Celeste

If you're up for a little dash of artistic pretentiousness, be sure to visit the Kate Breakey: Stilleven exhibit at the Gerald Peters Gallery, 2913 Fairmount St. "Stilleven" is a term meaning "motionless models" that Breakey uses rather than "still life." Operation Kindness, the no-kill animal shelter, is holding its 11th annual Canines, Cat and Cabernet wine tasting and auction Sunday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Westin Galleria Dallas. All over town, trendy establishments graciously forked out hundreds of items and gift certificates for our homeless four-legged friends. Need some added value?
