Every year, the barren, icy tundra of wintertime Dallas sparks fear in the hearts of metroplexians. Soon enough, we will have to brace for the utmost terrors caused by the forces of brutal Father Frost. Yes, that's right: Thermostats will get cranked an extra two degrees warmer. The horror! OK, so Dallas doesn't have much on the rest of the country in terms of winter hardship, but despite what those idiot Yankees may say, it does get damn cold around here in the winter. We at the Dallas Observer are fortunate to bundle up in our efficiencies when cold strikes, but there are two groups in Dallas that aren't so lucky: bums and nature.

The Guided Garden Walk: Winter Miracles is 10 a.m. Saturday at the Texas Discovery Gardens, 3601 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Fair Park. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and $1.50 for children ages 3 to 11. Children under 3 are admitted free. Call 214-428-7476.

This Saturday's Guided Garden Walk at Texas Discovery Gardens is an hour-long tour in discovering how the latter pulls it off; we're not sure if there's such a tour about the former, although we kind of wish there were. At any rate, the theme of the tour is "winter miracles," which we're assuming will have more to do with the survival strategies of plants, insects and critters during the next few months than with the Dallas Cowboys' championship hopes this year. The Guided Garden Walk is geared for kids and encourages them to dig in the dirt and touch the plants between nature lessons, but parents with green thumbs should pay attention to the bundles of advice that tour guide Melissa Martin will dispense for keeping home gardens fresh and colorful through any winter. So remember, when heading to the tour, make sure to drive 10 miles an hour in case there's a millimeter of ice on the road, lock the car doors in case you pass any bums and brace for the blistering 65 degrees outside that day. Damn cold, we say.
