Lone Star politicians work together

3/19

Politics have become as ubiquitous among Texas women as big hair. It's at dinner meetings, cocktail parties and salon visits, sitting alongside the heavy-duty hair spray and combs. At 7 p.m. Friday, you can check out the queen of Texas politics (and queen of big hair) when former Texas Governor Ann Richards joins U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison for "Stories From the Top" at The Women's Museum in Fair Park. See these two women from different parties come together to raise money and talk about their experiences. After the presentation, both will sign books: Hutchison's Nine and Counting: The Women of the Senateand Richards' I'm Not Slowing Down: My Battle With Osteoporosis. Tickets are $100 for members and $150 for non-members. Call 214-915-0861 or go to www.thewomensmuseum.org. --Desirée Henry

Time After Time
3/19

Photography is all about time. Developing and printing processes are closely monitored. Shutter speed dictates the length of exposure. But time can also be the theme. In Second Look at University of Texas at Dallas, Texas artists Kathy Lovas, Martin Menocal and others make reference to time, using series of images showing the passage of time, duration through film loops and time referenced as a subject. The exhibit is a collection of works in photography and digital media that spans traditional photography to film to sculpture, on view through April 15. The opening reception is Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Visual Arts Building on the campus at Campbell Road and University Drive, Richardson. Call 972-UTD-ARTS. --Merritt Martin

Pink Ladies
3/20

We like pink. For all its negative connotations--frilly girlhood, Molly Ringwald, one particularly grating season at the Gap--pink is an ultra-expressive color that reminds us of so many good things in the world. Bubblegum. Lip gloss. Spike heels. Are we getting off topic? Anyway, we were thrilled to discover that Houston artist Aimee Jones is not afraid of a little pink. Her first solo show at Plush, 1410 S. Akard St., is bold with the stuff. Called Luscious Ladyland--and, really, who could resist that title?--the exhibit is an intersection of traditional landscapes with psychedelic colors and everyday materials like Styrofoam cups. Jones calls the approach "a little elegant, a little trashy, kinda like fishnet stockings." Hmm. What is she saying about our church clothes? Anyway, the exhibit opens Saturday with a reception from 8 p.m. to midnight and runs until May 1. It's the very pink of art-chic. Call 214-498-5423. --Sarah Hepola
