Uptown Girls and Boys

Once upon a time Uptown was a neighborly neighborhood that rolled peacefully from the Hotel Crescent Court north to Lemmon Avenue past the Hard Rock Café, The McKinney Avenue Contemporary and Bread Winners Bakery with that trolley that nobody ever rides. But that was before Post Properties started its endless construction, the American Airlines Center wrangled the sports fans and ticket scalpers and the West (of what?) Village brought clueless suburbanites and their parking hassles. As City Hall and urban developers have been trying to unravel the mystery of bringing life back to downtown Dallas, the movers and shakers in Uptown haven't let the stagnancy on the other side of Woodall Rodgers Freeway deter them. You can rarely walk out of the latest hip eatery on McKinney Avenue without running into one of Post's newfangled "luxury residences."

The Uptown Run and Trolley Walk takes place Saturday at Annette Strauss Artist Square, 1800 Leonard St., with registration starting at 7 a.m. The awards ceremony and live music follow the races at 10:15 a.m. Entry is $22 through Friday, $25 on race day and $10 for children under 10 and adults 65 and over. Excluding that trolley, the best way to enjoy what's left of the Uptown neighborhood ambience is the 18th annual Uptown Run and Trolley Walk. The event features a race or fun run for everyone: Elsie's Kids K for children, a 5-mile and 5K run for serious and a-little-bit-less-than-serious runners, the Trolley Walk for walkers and the Special Olympics Run honoring the athletes who benefit from the day's proceeds. Making its debut at the Uptown Run this year is the Quick Invitational featuring an international assortment of male and female runners vying to set a new world record in the 8K race. The Quick Invitational course is a spectator-friendly loop along Woodall Rodgers and Ross Avenue designed to match the Crazy Eights course in elevation differences and number of turns. Whatever the race results, we bet Dallas wins for number of luxury residences on the course.
