We chickened out. Suzanne Calvin, the always helpful communications manager for The Dallas Opera, said that she might have been able to arrange a phone interview with Carol Vaness, who's performing at "An Evening With Carol Vaness," presented by The Women's Board of The Dallas Opera on Friday. We considered what we, the opera ignoramus, might ask the woman described as one of the world's best-loved sopranos. "So, 'soprano,' that's like the really high one, right?" and "Why are opera singers so largish?" were all that came to mind. We passed on the interview. There are limits to how much of our rube-ishness we're willing to expose to the world--a fact that will surprise our friends.

Instead, we read several opera reviews in The New York Times and a 5,000-word interview with Vaness published in Classical Singer Magazine. Here's what we learned: The Timesopera critics are some of the meanest people alive not currently serving time in penal institutions; Vaness started out as "mezzo" but switched to soprano; and even writers for a tony publication like CSMask famous opera singers about weight. (Vaness is a size 12.)

But what about the music? We bought a compilation that includes Vaness singing a Mozart aria. Just put it in the CD player right now, in fact. Hmm. Nice. Kinda high. A little slodjghagds...HUH? WHAZZAT? NO, I WASN'T SLEEPING!OK, so we are a rube. But if you have taste and $250 to spend (per person), call 214-368-3285 for reservations to "An Evening With Carol Vaness," which begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Venetian Room at The Fairmont Hotel, 1717 N. Akard St. The evening includes cocktails and dinner. --Patrick Williams
