We don't see too many black cowboys in our travels. Granted, we also don't run into Latino, Asian or even Caucasian cowboys very often, but we're pretty sure that the one thing rarer than an African-American cowboy is an African-American cowboy in a rodeo. Yes, they're out there and competing, but judging from our Fox Sports Net viewing experiences, African-American rodeo hopefuls haven't yet been blessed with their own Tiger Woods to blaze the calf-roping trail. That pessimism might be news to the hundreds of participants in Saturday's Texas Black Invitational Rodeo at the Fair Park Coliseum, 1438 Coliseum Drive, as they'll be competing in droves for a combined purse of $25,000. The 19th annual event rounds up a predominantly amateur group of black cowboys and cowgirls in such events as bull riding and steer wrestling, and the rodeo is seen as both a breakout point for potential pro riders and an opportunity for viewers to watch historical re-enactments and learn more about the history of black cowboys in America. The new guy here--let's call him Saul Hix--didn't know who the Dallas Desperados were. That's why he got put on the polo and rugby beat while the serious business of arena league football is left to the experienced playa. It all started out so promising for the Desperados, who won five of their first six games. Since the start, though? It hasn't gone so well. The Desperados are desperate. (I didn't plan that last bit, I swear.) They need to improve their playoff positioning, and you can help. Attend the last game. Cheer rabidly. Drink beer. What does The Colony have in common with Hawaii? Not much. One place is a tropical oasis, and the other is, well, The Colony. But hold onto your surf shorts because the Hawaiian Falls Adventure Park cranks up its water jets there on Memorial Day weekend. What the park lacks in prime surfing conditions and luaus it makes up for in water-slide action. An undulating speed slide, a 65-foot free-fall slide and a rain forest jungle playground complete with pulleys, geysers and a water-dumping bucket are just a few of the attractions. But, unlike Hawaii, you won't be sharing the wave pool with sharks. Hawaiian Falls will be open from May 29 through Labor Day. Park hours are 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Admission is $7.99 to $13.99.
