Ollabelle

July 11

Kudos to Diana Krall--or her manager, or booking agent, or publicist, or whoever--for taking this New York-based group out on the road this summer instead of one of the 657 young crooners currently vying for a bit of that filthy Next Norah Jones lucre. Ollabelle, who always refuses cash from middle-aged NPR listeners, is signed to T Bone Burnett's DMZ imprint at Sony Music, which makes sense: Burnett oversaw the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, and Ollabelle makes gently heterogeneous roots music that swirls together all the stuff Burnett assembled: Sunday-afternoon gospel, gravel-road folk, sweaty-forehead blues, even a trace of prehistoric funk to keep the young people interested.
