Remember when volleyball was relevant in America? Television wore fluorescent sunglasses in the late '80s and early '90s, when all things coastal ruled the airwaves as Beverly Hills 90210 and Baywatch whored the wonders of beach entertainment to millions and even Saved by the Bell had an episode in which Screech bumped, Slater set and Zack spiked against the smarmy meatheads at North Beach. These days, however, you're more likely to find a spelling bee on the sports channel than a nice dig, and the days of volleyball superstars like Gabrielle Reese and, uh, Randy "Vanilla Thunder" Stoklos are long gone. So what's a visor-sporting, shirt-lacking, metroplex V-balla' to do for a good fix of net time? Why, head to Frisco, of course, where Spikefest returns after a one-year hiatus to the Warren Sports Complex, 11225 Rogers Road, on Saturday and Sunday. The event pits amateur teams of three and five players against each other in tournament play, and each competitive bracket is broken up by age and skill level, which means kids 12 and up won't have to sit out and watch their parents fall in the dirt. Sorry, sand lovers: These games are on grass courts, so if you miss a spike, don't kick the ground in frustration like you've seen on Baywatch. Entry starts at $128 for teams of three. Dallas runners back the blue

It would be too easy to make a doughnut joke about anything involving cops and running, but, in all honesty, joggers and runners owe a serious debt to Dallas' finest. Whether it's a weekend fun run or the White Rock Marathon, off-duty Dallas police officers are always on hand directing traffic and keeping runners safe from road-raging and cell phone-yapping motorists. Sometimes the more polite runners manage to grunt out a verbal "thank you" as they zoom by, but now they have a chance to really show their appreciation at the Back the Blue Cannon Ball Run. Proceeds from the inaugural 5K run/walk, which winds through downtown, benefit the Dallas Police Association's Assist the Officers Foundation. It takes place Saturday at 7:45 a.m. at Gilley's Dallas, 1135 S. Lamar St. Entry is $25, $23 for seniors and $20 for ages 13 and under. Visit www.backthebluerun.com. --Jay Webb
