Dillinger Escape Plan

Friday, October 22

"Rebel Yell" was never as rebellious and was never, ever yelled as ferociously as by Dillinger Escape Plan's Greg Puciato. Blood streaming down his face after getting bashed in the noggin with a guitar, Puciato tore Billy Idol several new orifices with the help of his Dillinger Escape Plan mates. This was about a year ago at Emo's Austin, and it proved one thing: No matter how you deal with the "math metal" assault of these hyperspeed hardcore virtuosos on record, the live show is a one-of-a kind experience, a whirlwind journey through abstractions of the most rapid and aggressive sort imaginable. The band is touring behind Miss Machine, the long-awaited Relapse Records follow-up to 1999's widely hailed Calculating Infinity. Machine is their first record with Puciato behind the mike, after Faith No More/Mr. Bungle savant Mike Patton helmed the Irony Is a Dead Scene EP on an interim basis. The record opens up and even slows down their sound a bit at times, but one thing that cannot be stopped is this band in a small room.
