Slobberbone

Friday, December 31

Local music didn't take its true form for me until the year 2000. I'd heard great bands and great albums around here for years, but until I found Everything You Thought Was Right Was Wrong Today, I naïvely assumed local bands were less significant than bigger indie bands around the country. Slobberbone's third album, walking that fine line between country charm and rock power, destroyed that assumption. It was a full statement of emotion and songwriting prowess that rocked, swaggered and spilled over in all directions, and I always thought it was a crime that the album didn't turn the Denton quartet into alt-country lords, let alone major-label champions. I never looked at local music the same after Slobberbone entered my life, and that's why I'll toast the New Year at the band's final Dallas concert. Lord, they did the best they could.
