The last time the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim came to Ameriquest Field, they had a much simpler moniker (Anaheim Angels) and were a week away from acquiring another one: American League West champions. But then, during that last home stand of the season, our own Texas Rangers (or, if you prefer, the Dallas Rangers of Arlington) still had a chance of taking that title away from them. But when I walked in during the last game of the series, I saw a half-filled stadium, not a playoff atmosphere. No biggie, I thought, must be the traffic. They'll have their fans to push them over the top during this very important game by the middle innings at the latest. That's when they need them most, right? Well, no one else showed up, and most of the people who did split sometime around the seventh-inning stretch. You're better than that, people. You have a young, talented team that has a very good chance of making the playoffs. At the home opener on April 11, start supporting it. When we were considering the Camper Scamper 5K Run and 1-Mile Fun Run Saturday, we weighed our issues carefully. The opportunity to help children with serious illnesses (via Camp John Marc) trumps our aversion to exercising in public. Our inclination to stay indoors is bested by the excitement of the kids participating in this family event. But the real attraction was that this charitable event takes place on a "flat, fast course." No inclines! We can feel good about what we're doing and walk that sucker without tugging on the pants as they do the uphill inner-thigh creep. Because that's never fun for us...or the folks in our wake. Camper Scamper takes place at Reverchon Park (Maple Avenue and Turtle Creek Boulevard) with registration beginning at 7 a.m. and a group warm-up at 7:30 a.m. Day-of registration is $25. Soar like an eagle. Eat like a bird. Nesting. What do those things mean anyway? People don't really take to the sky, eat worms for brunch or cozy up their homes with sticks and discarded string. But what would it be like if we did? DestiNature: Flying Wild, with birds from the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center, gives families the opportunity to see how their feathered friends live with nest-building, "flying" through bird hurdles and creating a bird buffet. The event also teaches how to care for an orphaned or injured bird and to "talk turkey." Flying Wild is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Texas Discovery Gardens at Fair Park, 3601 Martin Luther King Blvd. Admission is $1.50 to $3.
