Kimya Dawson

Friday, April 22, at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios

In the solo work she's released since the casual dissolution of the Moldy Peaches, the New York anti-folk duo she shared with singer-songwriter Adam Green, Kimya Dawson has concentrated on teasing out the emotional profundities that were sometimes hard to hear in the Peaches' ragged, profane little ditties. On Hidden Vagenda, her first album for lo-fi stronghold K Records, Dawson sings perhaps the most touching song I've yet heard about globalization's ominous creep: "Why does everything cost so much money?" she wonders over quickly strummed acoustic guitars there's nothing anti- about. "Could somebody please help out my family? My mom needs hearing aids, new shoulders and new legs."
