It's a damn good thing that Dave & Buster's hosts Karaoke Idol on Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., because no self-respecting Idol (that's right, we mean American Idol) fan would leave the house on Tuesday or Wednesday before the performances are over and the unlucky name is announced. On Thursday, however, we can channel our inner Vonzell Solomon or maybe run into a local boy that resembles (and sounds like) our beloved Constantine Maroulis. We'll be there--that is, if Scott Savol has finally been cut. If he hasn't, we're staging a protest. Dave & Buster's is located at 10727 Composite Drive. Must be the genes. There's no other answer for such amazing comedic stamina. For more than 45 years Tom and Dick Smothers have been causing audiences serious laugh cramps and "I laughed so hard..." tears. From their first appearance at San Francisco's The Purple Onion in 1959 to Friday's performance at Bass Hall, the Smothers Brothers have achieved a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a retrospective from the Museum of Television and Radio, induction into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame and more. And not only are they accomplished, but they gave opportunities to up-and-coming comedians such as Steve Martin (after his glamorous gig at Knott's Berry Farm) and a clean-mouthed George Carlin (it was on prime time, after all) on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in the 1960s. Entertainers and mentors, the Smothers Brothers are nothing if not inspiring. See them at Fort Worth's Bass Performance Hall, 525 Commerce St., on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $27.50 to $47.50. We're not speaking from personal experience or anything, but sometimes eBay is a little overwhelming. For instance, how would one best auction a rather large lot of macramé owls? What about a collection of vintage tees including winning slogans like "I'm not fat, I'm just fluffy!", "Show me your (beer) NUTS!" and "I want Charles in Charge of Me!"? (Again, this is purely an example and not at all what we have stowed in a storage unit.) eBay University offers the answer in two concurrent Saturday classes at the Embassy Suites Hotel Outdoor World, 2401 Bass Pro Drive in Grapevine. Here's something that hooked us on an event we'd normally run screaming from: Over the course of the American Baby Faire Dallas, 500 babies are scheduled to race. We may not understand feeding practices or even be able to change a diaper, but we'd totally watch a cutthroat race for the title of Fastest Crawler. Because, well, babies aren't cute or sweet; they're funny-looking. Therefore we're pretty much guaranteed a good laugh from a swarm of combat-crawling infants. Of course, the expo offers things other than knee squeaks and elbow-throwing (from the most ruthless of babies). Check out samples, child-care news, parenting info and services, young families exhibits and more on Saturday (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Sunday (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at Dallas Market Hall, 2100 N. Give me a recipe, a spatula and the right ingredients and I'm set. I can cook with the best of them. Sure, I've had my issues--leaving the plastic on the ham (there are two layers, by the way), gross misuse of garlic, subbing almond extract for vanilla--but those were years ago, and today I am a confident, strong cook. Well, except for one particular food group. Fish. I know nothing about it--how to cook it or even how to tell if it's fresh. But I also know that fish can be healthful, tasty and a great alternative to the boring chicken that inundates my everyday menu, so I'm looking to get schooled. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican victory at the 1862 Battle of Pueblo. The Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico celebrates this historical event as well as Mexican heritage with Celebrating Cinco de Mayo, a program that represents traditional dances from Chiapas, Tamaulipas, Puebla and Narayit and performances by the Junior Company-Huasteca and Children's Company-Nuevo Leon. Shows for children and youths (admission is $5, 214-828-0181) are at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday with an evening show at 7:30 Wednesday (admission is $6 to $10, 214-373-8000) at the Majestic Theatre, 1925 Elm St. An evening performance is scheduled for 7:30 Thursday at the Latino Cultural Center, 2600 Live Oak St. Tickets are $6 to $10.
