We've heard of shotgun weddings, but shotgun ballet? Why not? It's for a good cause. Pack some heat and your checkbook to help raise funds for the Texas Ballet Theater by shooting sporting clays (think golf with a shotgun) at the Dallas Gun Club on Saturday at the intersection of Interstate 35 E and Highway 121 in Lewisville. Start times are staggered at 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. and build to a climax with the infamous Annie Oakley competition that evening. Later, you'll have a chance to lick the gunpowder and barbecue sauce off your fingers at a carnivore lover's dinner served up by gun club chef John Parker. He assures us you won't have to shoot your own supper. In the U.S. military, the training exercise is called "war ball." Opposing squads line up in formations, devise strategies and face off in a battle that combines speed, brute force and, um, Nerf balls. When our troops aren't battling Iraqi insurgents, they're arguing about Private O'Malley being over the line after pelting Sergeant Jorgensen. To be all you can be without enlisting, head to Dunford Recreation Center, 1015 Green Canyon Drive in Mesquite, on Saturday. Dallas Dodgeball, the unofficial (and purportedly only) dodgeball league in town, is open to all comers with a $2 entry fee. Show up before 3 p.m. to pick teams. Call 972-279-9285. --Sam Machkovech

When was the last time you picked up trash? No, not at The Beagle on Greenville--I mean honest-to-God junk, the detritus of our consumer society. How about the last time you got wet and muddy? I said not at The Beagle. Besides, The Beagle sure as hell didn't have free Starbucks coffee and fresh-baked pastries. Ah, now you're interested. All of the above can be yours on Saturday at the White Rock Lake Shoreline Spruce-up. The monthly cleanups are organized by the volunteer group For the Love of the Lake, and they're part of why Dallas was recently awarded the Lone Star Land Steward Award for White Rock's healthy vegetation and abundant wildlife. And we're talking about more than squirrels and pigeons: The park has raccoons, skunks, possibly even beaver. When was the last time you saw a beaver? Hey--what did I say? The spruce-up is Saturday with registration from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the FTLOTL office, corner of Garland Road and Buckner Boulevard, and cleanup is from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Visit www.whiterocklake.org. --Rick Kennedy
