Chic art gallery owner Nancy Whitenack isn't afraid to do a little "down dog" to liven things up. "Galleries can get a tad stuffy sometimes," says Whitenack, who owns the Conduit Gallery in the Oak Lawn Design District. "With summer here, we wanted to loosen things up and have a little fun," she says. Whitenack originally joked about trotting out wading pools and margarita machines but finally settled on Summer Becomes Eclectic, a new series of Friday-night happenings at Conduit that kicks off this week with, of all things, yoga. We've secretly fantasized about doing a lot of things in an art gallery, but yoga is a stretch even for our twisted minds. Good thing Whitenack is bringing in the big guns: yoga instructors Chinook and Barb Totzke. This pliable power couple, who normally lead "underground yoga" classes at the South Side on Lamar building, will bring their distinctive style of Yoga Flow to the gallery. Oh, and what's that flow thing all about? Don't panic, it's plain old yoga, but with a stronger emphasis on movement and breath connection. Bring your own mat and your checkbook--you may see something for your walls while posing here. Flagpole Day

What could be more patriotic than getting out of bed early on a Monday morning (that would otherwise be a holiday from work) and running an 8K race? OK, several things, namely barbecue and fireworks, but we're saving the food and the flames for the afternoon and evening respectively. The 21st annual Flagpole 8K Road Race will get your all-American blue blood pumping hard enough to turn your face red on the streets around the north end of White Rock Lake. The race is an excellent training run for any 5K runners looking to increase their stamina for 10K races. The event also features the Tadpole 2K Fun Run/Walk for any younger (but equally patriotic) sports who also get up early.
