Pernice Brothers, Phosphorescent, The Cloud Room

Saturday, September 10, at Dan's Silverleaf

Over the course of four LPs and one kick-ass live album, Joe Pernice and his rock and roll brothers have produced some of the finest power-pop ever made. One of rock's most literate tunesmiths, Pernice has honed his craft for over a decade now, first with his dour countrypolitan outfit Scud Mountain Boys and now with the Pernice Brothers. And while the early '00s saw him recording both a solo album and an LP under the name Chappaquiddick Skyline, for the past four years he has concentrated his energies into the Pernice Brothers, resulting in a string of near-perfect pop albums, including this year's Discover a Lovelier You.

Phosphorescent's Matthew Houck is quite the songwriter himself, and while he may not have Pernice's experience, he's certainly worthy of sharing the stage with him. Phosphorescent's second album, Aw Come Aw Wry,just might be the folk album of the year, a perfect mix of Will Oldham melancholy and drunken Stax/Volt horns that's been compared to Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea but more than ably stands on its own. New York City new-wave band The Cloud Room opens this can't-miss concert.
