Enchilada Heaven

I can still remember the way the cheese enchiladas at Fonda San Miguel felt on my tongue. Covered in a sweaty salsa verde, the delectable queso torpedos sunk my palate into a state of culinary ecstasy. It was my first visit to the Austin institution, which opened in 1975, and I was a poor college student eating on my girlfriend's parents' dime. I had never been to such a swanky Mexican restaurant, nor had I ever seen such a fine example of Mexican interior decoration outside of the homes of a few cartel leaders in my favorite action movies. I'm not the only one who's been blown away, either. Lady Bird Johnson is a regular customer of the restaurant, and it's been rumored that the unholy union of Dubya and Laura Bush was forged within its well-decorated walls. This Saturday at 2 p.m., co-owners Tom Gilliland and Miguel Ravago visit Barnes & Noble, 7700 W. Northwest Highway, to sign Fonda San Miguel:Thirty Years of Food and Art, a collection of recipes and art celebrating the restaurant's anniversary. Call 214-739-3643.
Sat., Feb. 4, 2 p.m.
