Rolling History

Take a trolley ride in black and white

There's something undeniably charming about the streetcars on McKinney Avenue. Even if you're stuck behind one in traffic, it's still a refreshing reminder of a time when Dallas marched to a much slower beat—one better suited to the easy cadence of our collective Southern drawl. Since 1989, the streetcars have been operated by the McKinney Avenue Transit Authority, a nonprofit organization started specifically to preserve this important little piece of Dallas history. Local photographer Van Ditthavong expressed his fascination with the McKinney Avenue streetcars (and the people charged with preserving them) by capturing the trolleys and their operators in a series of black-and-white photographs on display at the Van Ditthavong Gallery, 830 Exposition Ave. Monday night the gallery hosts an opening reception for Streetcars + Motormen: Dallas from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with hors d'oeuvres by Mike Smith, executive chef of 2900 Restaurant.
