If you're a woman seeking international prominence, it wouldn't hurt to have had a close relative killed in the 1973 Chilean military coup. Just look at Michele Bachelet. Her father Alberto was "disappeared" by the Pinochet regime, and presto, she was elected president of Chile last month. Then there's Isabel Allende. Her Uncle Salvador was deposed and killed in the coup, and poof, she's a famous novelist (The House of the Spirits, Zorro: A Novel and others) and carrying the Olympic flag in the opening ceremony.
