For the Gals

The screen lights up with Women In Film

When James Brown declared, "This is a man’s world," he wasn't speaking about the film industry, but the sentiment certainly applies. Women In Film was formed to combat the "boys' club" atmosphere in Hollywood. WIF Dallas celebrates International Women's Day and women behind the camera with a month of screenings, including Kimberly Pierce's award-winning drama Boys Don't Cry. Just as the film tells the true story of Brandon Teena's struggles to live as a man in a woman's body, WIF works to achieve equality for the filmmaking woman working in a man's world. Because even James Brown knows this world "wouldn't be nothing without a woman or a girl." Boys Don't Cry screens at 7:30 p.m. (a social hour begins at 6:30 p.m.) Wednesday at the Studio Movie Grill in Addison, 5405 Belt Line Road. Tickets range from $7 to $30. Call 972-991-6684 or visit studiomoviegrill.com or wifdallas.org.
