Around the World in 24

There were always the kids that had a bit of nerd in them. They had more books than your mom, and you could see them coming a mile away with their shiny "Library Aide" badges. Now when I say "they," what I really mean is "me." It's true--I’d pick a book over a game of ball every time. I secretly hoped that one day I would accidentally get locked into the library overnight (that, or a mall food court...). No filling out little slips of paper just to look at a reference book--I'd take a nap on the encyclopedias if I wanted! It's just too bad for me that Big Thought didn't exist when my fellow bookworms and I were kids. Now they've joined together with Chase and the Dallas Public Library to bring us Tour Around the World in 24 Hours with Library Live! Think of it as an educational lock-in, only without the locked doors. For 24 hours straight, kids—both nerd and non-nerd—will get to tour the world through readings, crafts, activities and performances (they'll even get passports that will be stamped at each international "stop"). I may have to kidnap my nieces after last call for a trip to Magical Dream Land for some Harry Potter fun. The Library Live! tour takes place from 10 a.m. Friday through 10 a.m. Saturday in the 2nd floor Children's Center of J. Erik Jonsson Central Library, 1515 Young St. in downtown Dallas. Admission is free. Call 214-670-1671 or visit bigthought.org.
Fri., April 7, 10 a.m.
