Deep Ellum comes alive in the daylight

We were recently out in Park City, Utah, for their little "film festival," and we were impressed. Charming downtown packed with colorful historic houses, nearby ski slopes full of day visitors, dozens of new films showing every day, attracting industry insiders and celebrities alike to cut deals and be creative…But it was really cold. And while we gave skiing a girl-scout try, we fell in the snow an awful lot. When it comes to artsy experiences, we'll have a much more hospitable climate this weekend for the Deep Ellum Arts Festival. We plan to stroll among the 100 artist booths on Main Street and check out leather workers, contemporary metal sculptors, photographers and painters. There's also an all-day, every-day rotating list of about 65 musicians on four different stages, including Belafonte, The Valentines, Spoonfed Tribe, Space Cadet and local folkie favorite Lu Mitchell at 7 p.m. Friday on the Texas Singer Songwriter Stage. There's a 5K run Sunday at 11 a.m. and a pet parade at noon, but what has us really excited is the Rock Art Show. This brings together rare works from musicians like John Lennon, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, Carlos Santana and the Monkees' drummer Micky Dolenz. The art show also showcases rock photographers' images of the Grateful Dead, Stevie Ray Vaughan and The Rolling Stones, along with handwritten lyrics, album artwork and work from Yellow Submarineand the Beatles' ABC Saturday morning cartoon series. We'll take a sunny weekend in Deep Ellum over Utah any day. The Deep Ellum Arts Festival runs this weekend, 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
