Heads Above the Rest

Dark Star Orchestra brings back the Dead

Q: What did one Deadhead say to the other Deadhead after the LSD wore off? A: “Man, this band sucks!”

If you think that joke is totally harsh, you probably won't definitely avoid seeing Dark Star Orchestra, a Grateful Dead cover band making its way to the Lakewood this Thursday. Taking the cover band idea to a new LARPing extreme, DSO doesn't just play the songs of the Grateful Dead—that would be unlistenable! They actually recreate actual Dead concerts, from the placement and number of microphones onstage to the exact set list from a specific show. Fans are then able to read these and other clues given to try and guess the date and location of the concert DSO is recreating. The concept is mind-boggling; it really challenges the idea that potheads can't remember anything. It also supports my theory that DSO fans are database robots with shitty taste in music. And finally, it gives me hope that my Journey cover band, Weekend At Journeys, is gonna be huge! Dark Star Orchestra performs at 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Lakewood Theater, 1825 Abrams Parkway. General admission tickets are $19, or $21 at the door. Call 214-821-7469 or visit lakewoodtheater.com.
Thu., April 6, 8 p.m.
