Street Strollin'

Get your fill of meats-on-sticks at Fort Worth's fest

Street fairs are a great excuse to eat meat on a stick while bargaining for some hemp jewelry. When the weather's nice, the crowds aren't too pushy and there's no line at the funnel cakes booth, nothing can beat an hour of strolling down a blocked-off street perusing the wares of local artists and craftsmen. And the folks at the Main St. Fort Worth Arts Festival take their street fair pretty seriously, as it's ranked in the top 500 art festivals in the United States and rakes in $7 million in art sales over the course of its four days. Live entertainment surrounds the fair; three stages are set up to showcase all kinds of bands (from Brave Combo to Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk to OK Go!), as well as various improv and theater groups, DJs and street performers. Come for the fun of turkey-leg-in-one-hand, plastic-cup-of-beer-in-the-other. But stay for the people-watching, blown glass mini-sculptures and participatory theater troupes. The Main St. Fort Worth Arts Festival takes place Thursday through Sunday in downtown Fort Worth between the Tarrant County Courthouse and the Fort Worth Convention Center. There is no charge to attend, although buying food and drink coupons will tack on a few cents in festival fees. Call 817-336-2787 or visit mainstreetartsfest.org.
