The title of this Scottish post-rock outfit's new Mr. Beast is indicative of both their predilection for raw amplifier noise and their skewed sense of humor. Unfortunately, the album doesn't quite live up to its excellent name: Though they're still more interesting than their more celebrated Icelandic peers in Sigur Rós--who seem to have settled into a snooze-worthy New Age rut--Mogwai don't sound as urgent as they used to on Beast, perhaps because so many young bands have in recent years appropriated the band's quiet-loud attack for themselves. Nevertheless, Mogwai have a deep catalog to draw from (including highlights from post-rock landmarks like 1999's Come on Die Young); expect your hair to be blown back tonight.
