24-Hour Film-ness

What a difference a day makes

What can you do in 24 hours? You can have a shirt dry-cleaned 24 times. You can watch an entire season of 24. Or you can race to make a movie. Those who choose the latter, as part of the Video Association of Dallas' Fifth Annual 24-Hour Video Race, will arrive at midnight Friday for instructions. They will receive the theme, a prop, the location and a line of dialogue that they must include in their film, then race to write, shoot and edit a five-minute movie before the following midnight.

The concept is similar to the Glitches Be Damned event hosted by Denton's infamous Good/Bad Art Collective in 1995, in which participants had only 12 hours to complete their projects and results were screened that evening. The 24-Hour Video Race is a competition, however, and while all completed films will be screened beginning Tuesday, a panel of judges will determine which films will advance to the "final judging" taking place on May 23. You won't want to miss the frenzied results, which at the very least will be better than Crash.

The Fifth Annual 24-Hour Video Race Screenings take place beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday through May 18 at the Angelika Film Center, 5321 E. Mockingbird Lane. Tickets are $3. Call 214-841-4700 or visit 24hourvideoracedallas.com.
May 16-18, 7 p.m.
