Farewell, Maestro

The DSO honors Litton

OK, Dallas. It's your last chance to catch acclaimed conductor Andrew Litton leading our Dallas Symphony Orchestra. He's an international legend now. The last 12 years of his 23-year conducting career have been with the DSO, a group he's led through three major European tours, seven annual summer residencies at Vail, Colorado, and 25 recordings—a list of accomplishments rivaling that of any top-notch contemporary American orchestra. The group even won a Grammy last year for their recording of Rachmaninoff's piano concerto with Stephen Hough, a favored guest of the DSO and Litton's personal friend (not surprising considering Litton's love of piano). If you've ever been fortunate enough to catch him performing Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, sharing the director/solo piano spotlight with his Dallas comrades, count yourself lucky. Litton started playing when he was only 5, got the conducting "bug" at 10 and was soon hooked into a career of swinging a stick in coattails. Now we'll have to share him with the rest of the world as Litton moves on to the position of Music Director Emeritus. Performances Thursday through Saturday feature vocalists Charlotte Hellekant and Harolyn Blackwell with the Dallas Symphony Chorus in a Mahler and Bernstein program specially picked for Litton's farewell concert.
