Fusion is a concept I've never been comfortable with. No one can deny the greatness that is the spork, but the skort? Come on. The problem with fusion is that in order to achieve a good end result, you would have to take two beloved things and combine to produce a new item that can somehow be seen as better (or at least more practical) than the originals. Not an easy feat. So imagine my reaction when I heard about Pretty Hate Machine by Company Mayes. In a nutshell, a dancer-turned-choreographer is opening up the ballet market in Dallas by taking the popular Nine Inch Nails album of the same title and turning it into "a fusion of jazz, lyrical and contemporary dance movements." I could not be making this up if I tried. If you're feeling adventurous (and really open-minded), check it out. Pretty Hate Machine takes place at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday in the Dallas Museum of Art's Horchow Theatre, 1717 N. Harwood St. Tickets are $14. Call 972-306-7782.
