ACL history visits the Gaylord

This year's Austin City Limits music festival lineup was announced last week, but it's a bit underwhelming compared to last year's and full of repeat offenders from previous editions. The general consensus for ACL 2006 thus far: "Nah, let's skip it."

Now that you're dead-set against Austin City Limits: "the festival," keep an open mind toward Austin City Limits: Making Music-Making History, an exhibit of memorabilia celebrating 30 years of performances in front of that Austin skyline backdrop. (Remember: Austin City Limits was a TV show long before it was an excuse to stand in a field for three days drinking beer.) The exhibit features more than 90 photographs by Scott Newton along with two documentary films chronicling the evolution of the PBS show from a twangy weekend oddity in the ’70s to the rock hipster haven it is today.

Maybe by the time the exhibit ends on September 3 you'll be psyched for this year's festival September 15 through September 17. Austin City Limits: Making Music-Making History opens Friday as part of the Gaylord Texan Memorial Day Music Festival and is on display through September 3 at the Gaylord Texan, 1501 Gaylord Trail in Grapevine. Admission is $5, $3 per child. Call 817-778-1000 or visit gaylordhotels.com/gaylordtexan.
