Dallas' Prostitute

The once-Little D hussy opens on Commerce Street

As another creative and cultural outlet leaves Denton for greener pastures, it's hard to herald the coming of the "new Fry Street," poised to effectively gentrify any lingering ounce of counterculture the town once provided. Art Prostitute is only the most recent in a long line of artists and musicians who have been pushed out of Denton by circumstance, flocking to larger cities where the jobs, scenes and girlfriends take them. In AP’s case, a move to Dallas has brought them a bigger space and, hopefully, a bigger audience—one who wouldn't make the drive north to the Denton gallery for openings and events. Bringing the mountain to Mohammed, so to speak, the guys at AP have found a new home downtown.

The inaugural event in its new home is an exhibition of work by Dave Kinsey. The Pittsburgh native is known for his use of urban landscapes as a backdrop for social commentary through graphic design. He is also the founder of the BLK/MRKT design agency in Los Angeles, attempting to bridge the "widening gap between corporate marketing techniques and the youth culture they were trying to reach." Dave Kinsey's work will be on display Saturday through July 16, with an opening reception Saturday at 6 p.m. at Art Prostitute, 2919-C Commerce St. Admission is free. Visit artprostitute.com.
Mondays-Saturdays, 12-8 p.m. Starts: June 3. Continues through July 16
