The CityArts Celebration people just might be the most intelligent event planners ever. Know why? Because CityArts takes place the second weekend in June. Not the last in July, not the third in August. These people realize that we actually live in Texas, in Dallas, in the meteorological equivalent to Hell, if Hell were humid and dry all in the same day. Festivals, as a rule, should have a wide variety of activity options and entertainment in a setting that combines a warm—not unbearably hot—day, a breezy night and the option to escape either. The CityArts peeps obviously subscribe to my newsletter, because they're offering a three-day celebration in the downtown Arts District that offers four outdoor stages (Hourly Radio, Dallas Black Dance, Texas Performing Chinese Arts, Big Thought/Young Audiences, Light Crust Doughboys, Sara Hickman and others), cooking demos and children's activities plus exhibits, concerts and free admission inside the air-conditioned walls of the Meyerson Symphony Center, Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center and the Crow Collection of Asian Art. The festival, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, is a pitch-perfect combination of outdoor and indoor fun that's high in culture and doesn't require one to sweat.
