Worst Concert Ever?

C'mon, it's Chicago and Huey Lewis

Seems we'll plug just about anything in this paper; who's on the schedule next week, Anne Murray and Nickelback? What's left to say about Chicago at this late date? Started as a horny pop band, wound up as a schmaltz factory; music rarely gets this innocuous and offensive at the same time, unless there's a pops fest in town turning the concert hall into a lite-rock quarry. As for Huey, who's no baby any longer, his product's old News; any guy who ever had the nerve damage to insist it's hip to be square has to know he was destined to play the shitlin' circuit in the near future. He had cred for about this long—between the time the band was called Clover in the 1970s and played on Elvis Costello's debut (Lewis, alas, didn't show on My Aim Is True) and when it asked "Do You Believe in Love?" in 1982. (Sports wasn't half bad, but I was 15 in 1983; what did I know?) That he's sharing a bill with Chicago, which is on album CDXLVIII by now, says all you need to know about his rock cred in 2006—as in, he's got nada. Huey Lewis and Chicago perform June 23 at the Smirnoff Music Centre, 1818 1st Ave. Show starts at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $24.50 to $59.50. Call 214-373-8000 or visit ticketmaster.com.
Fri., June 23, 7:30 p.m.
