A Nation's Scrapbook

I used to think photography was a cop-out kind of art. Where was the actual creation? Heck, I could snap a picture and have me some art! But my Mesquite mentality (hey, I used to live there) was soon changed after seeing Richard Avedon's In The American West, a collection of photos in which he took the Everyman from America's frontier (with a leathery face or pained eyes) and created incredibly dynamic visions of people against a simple white backdrop. That signature look was ingenious in capturing the truest essence of any human being, as if the subject had the infinity of time in which to make his mark. 100 Great American Photographs, featuring some of Avedon's work, runs through August 20 at the Amon Carter Museum, 3501 Camp Bowie Blvd. in Fort Worth.
