The Crow Collection hosts a day of Asian culture

Art, like pornography, is difficult to define. It can be purely decorative or completely utilitarian, the result of some spontaneous expression or a well-planned and rehearsed performance or ceremony. Art is many things, and we'd like to hope it is in all things, but what it is exactly is difficult to put your finger on (you'd better not anyway, because that will get you kicked out of a museum). Terms like "ancient" or "modern" and "East" or "West" are applied and, in fact, region may be most important because we know that art is a direct extension of culture. Context is an important thing when understanding art or culture, especially when the Crow Collection of Asian Art presents a cultural event that sounds like it could be the title of a pornographic film: Inside Asia, Journey to Japan. Besides the collection of work from China, India, Japan and Southeastern Asia from a period spanning from 3500 B.C. to the early 20th century, this event features sake tasting, flute music, a live performance of music from the opera Madame Butterfly and drawing in the galleries from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. Admission is free. The Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art is located at 2010 Flora St. Call 214-979-6430 or visit crowcollection.org.
Thu., July 13, 5-9 p.m.
