Living in Texas, it's hard not to be amused by Southern-slanted comedies such as Steel Magnolias and Daddy's Dyin'...Who's Got the Will?, both of which got their start on the stage before making the leap to the big screen. (In related news, we eagerly await the George Lucas/Peter Jackson rehash of the Greater Tuna trilogy...not.) Though they've yet to make the same leap, Lone Star and Laundry and Bourbon are cut from the same Southern cloth, set in the 1970s and full of small-town humor, drinking and gossip. Both plays also deal with the aftereffects of Vietnam on small-town Texas, examining the issue through the eyes of a drunken veteran (Lone Star) and his worried wife (Laundry and Bourbon). Since making their debuts in 1979 and 1980, respectively, the two sister plays have gone on to become favorites of community theaters from coast to coast, often gracing stages together as a double bill. Catch them both starting Friday at the Contemporary Theatre of Dallas, 5601 Sears St. The run continues every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday through September 3. Tickets are $24 for adults, $19 for students and seniors. For tickets and showtimes, visit contemporarytheatreofdallas.com.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Aug. 11. Continues through Sept. 3
