Dallas' annual literary festival returns

Oh cruel joke of irony, how you have cut me to the quick. In some odd fashion, I find myself at a loss for words about a literary festival. Literary! Festival! Do you see the twist of fate in all of this? But I must trudge on for the sake of my art. (Please, no tears.) It seems I should attend the upcoming Texas Unbound Literary Festival for some inspiration. For the next two weekends, the festival will host some of Dallas' superstar writers for an experience of theater, poetry and music. The weekends are packed with staged readings, slam hip-hop poetry and cabaret performances. Keep an eye out for Split Ends, the one-woman show by UTD professor Venus Opal Reese in which she explores the black woman's history in America through her hair. And check out Bruce DuBose and Akin Babatunde's Recreating the Dallas Blues, featuring music from Blind Lemon Jefferson and Jimmie Rodgers. Both should prove to be highlights of the festival and enlightening as well. Texas Unbound begins 7 p.m. Thursday at the Undermain Theater, 3200 Main St. in Deep Ellum. All shows are $7. Aug. 10-20, 7 p.m.
