Literary Licks

See Tongues Dance at the Undermain

Seeing as the Dancing Tongue Literary Cabaret does not, in fact, have anything to do with the works of Anaïs Nin, we'll endeavor to avoid any skeevy, tired jokes using naughty Latin words. Rather than overheated diarists, Dancing Tongue's focus is on poets, blending their words with live music and dramatic performances and video. The troupe's production at 7 p.m. Sunday at Undermain Theater, 3200 Main St., is a "best of" collection featuring highlights from the group's spring shows: The Hip Show, about Beat poets and music; The American Vistas Show, honoring the works of Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson and transcendentalist writers; and the post-World War I weirdness of Europe in The DaDa Show. Bluesman Josh Alan is the special musical guest at the revue. Dancing Tongue encourages audience participation in its performances, so you might want to check the attic for that old college edition of The Norton Anthology of Poetry before you head out. How do you enjoy, let alone participate in, a multimedia/poetry cabaret ensemble? We suggest you take a hint from Whitman and the Beats, and enjoy a few leaves of grass. The show is part of WordSpace's Texas UnBound 2006 Summer Literary Festival. Tickets are $7. Call 214-747-5515.
Sun., Aug. 20, 7 p.m.
