Sweet Virginia

Virginia Woolf was an interesting woman. She was one of the most critically acclaimed literary figures of the 20th century and she had a huge nose, as portrayed by Nicole Kidman's prosthetic beak in her Oscar-winning role in The Hours. Shortly after Woolf's death, a play opened on Broadway called Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The play attracted her fans, who packed into the theater only to find after watching the entire play that Woolf wasn't even mentioned once. The title was merely a sophisticated pun used by the main characters to show their intelligence. But regardless of Woolf's absence from the show, it is still a classic. The plot follows the course of an evening dinner party as several spoiled upper-class couples play dinner games at the expense of one another. It's a good story with a few surprising twists, and although the curtain closed on the original production more than 45 years ago, you still have a chance to catch it this month—Grapevine's Runway Theatre, 215 N. Dooley St., is showing the play (as part of their Departure Series) through Sunday. Tickets are $10. Call 817-488-4842 or visit runwaytheatre.com.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 3 p.m. Starts: Aug. 11. Continues through Aug. 20
