Kids get the facts at Half Price Books

We appreciate the efforts of those who encourage children to study the sciences. After all, it'll be up to the next generation to come up with the nifty scientific advances we'll need to counteract the abuse we've given our bodies. Smoking, drinking, fatty foods, no exercise—those chickens should be heading home to roost in our lungs and arteries in about 20 years, so get to crackin' those science books, 12-year-olds! If saving the bacon—mmm, bacon—of future elderly newspaper people isn't incentive enough to inspire kids to study science, maybe the Dallas Museum of Nature & Science can help. The museum is offering a science-themed story time and science demonstrations from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the community room at Half Price Books, 5803 E. Northwest Highway. Kids will hear stories from Dear Professor Einstein: Albert Einstein's Letters to and From Children, listen to tales about the wilds of Australia and get to make their own models of carbon atoms, among other activities. (Here's a suggestion for the museum folk: If you really want to get the kids interested, use science to make something that blows up. Much cooler than a carbon atom. Seriously, you gotta encourage these young people. Those new lungs we need aren't going to grow all by themselves.) Call 214-379-8000.
