Drowning in Camp

The Aqua Rangers take Lakewood

If there's one universal truth about children's programming, it's the fact that the best kids' shows are the ones created by people who are clearly under the influence of drugs. Sesame Street, Teletubbies, Pee-Wee's Playhouse—drugs, drugs and more drugs. Judging by the trailer, the creators of The Aqua Rangers fell under the spell of such shows at an early age, most notably the works of Sid and Marty Krofft—the men behind visionary programs such as H.R. Pufnstuf and Land of the Lost. Borrowing the bright colors and cheesy special effects of those classics, The Aqua Rangers follows the adventures of Webb Torpedo and Rusty Bolts, a spandex-clad twosome that bears a striking resemblance to Robert Smigel's Ambiguously Gay Duo. Webb and Rusty have a long way to go before they can elicit the same belly laughs as Ace and Gary, however—not surprising since the beloved Saturday Night Live characters were voiced by future comedy superstars Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell. At least they've got the fashion down. The locally produced comedy serial premieres at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lakewood Theater, 1825 Abrams Parkway, where they’ll also be selling freshly minted copies on DVD. The event is free.
