Jewel drives her van to the Meyerson

For untold numbers of teenage girls circa 1996, Jewel Kilcher was much more than a musician—she was a role model. She taught us to aspire to many, many things, such as living in vans and playing guitars in bathroom stalls. She gave us hope. If the jerk who inspired "You Were Meant for Me" didn't love Jewel, then it wasn't so bad that our teenage boyfriends ditched us for hot cheerleaders. I would like to personally thank Jewel for motivating me to play pretty much the entirety of her songwriting catalog at church talent shows and open mic nights when I was going through my "hippie phase" at age 14. If it weren't for Jewel, I would never have become proficient at warbling, something my roommates and boyfriends have enjoyed immensely in the years since. Most of all, without Jewel I would never have enjoyed the sweet pleasure of Schick's Intuition women's razor, the commercials for which featured Jewel's 2003 hit "Intuition." Only Jewel-endorsed hair removal technology is good enough for these gams. If you, too, have reason to love Ms. Kilcher, you can holler a praise or two during her performance this Thursday at the Meyerson Symphony Center, 2301 Flora Street. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $40.50 to $100.50. Visit dallassymphony.com.
Thu., Aug. 31, 7:30 p.m.
