Chuck's Children

Norris KICKSTARTs our hearts

In the early '70s, crowds flocked to see Enter the Dragon, and all of a sudden, everybody was kung-fu fighting. While Bruce Lee has gone to the great dojo in the sky, one legend lives on: Chuck Norris. More than a faux Texas Ranger, more than an Internet punch line, the bearded one has ascended higher in the ranks of martial arts than many other Westerners. But he ain't just fists and roundhouse kicks—in 1990, he founded a youth program, now called KICKSTART, to teach kids karate and martial arts philosophy as a means to provide discipline, teach goal-setting and encourage success and conflict-resolution skills. KICKSTART's annual fund-raiser takes place Saturday at the Adolphus Hotel, 1321 Commerce St., at 6:30 p.m. and features an auction and a performance by Wynonna Judd. Individual tickets to the Dallas Black Belt Event and Auction are $500, with higher-level sponsorships available. Call 214-704-7773.
Sat., Sept. 9, 6:30 p.m.
